Two days ago–August 6–was the anniversary of Elliott Smith’s birth. If you don’t know who he is or have not listened to his music, do. First off, he was obviously an extraordinary person–humble, honest, kind, thoughtful. Nothing at all like the (sadly) typical rock star. And his music is just like him–“what it means to be a person,” he said about his songs. Beautiful, haunting, inspiring… I think my next book will be about Elliott–more a straight biography, the story of his life, than a psychobiography (though the psychology part is never entirely absent). That’s the plan for now. We’ll see what develops. Meanwhile, check out “Waltz #2,” one of his minor masterpieces.
